Valentine's Day
Saint Valentine's Day is shortened to Valentine's Day. It is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after Saint Valentine. It is traditionally a day, on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers and sending greeting cards. Valentine was a priest, who refused the law imposed by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. He ordered that all young men should remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius came to know it, he was very furious and ordered his soldiers to arrest Valentine and jail him. In the jail, he was brutally tortured and finally beheaded on 14th February in the year 270. According to the legends, Saint Valentine was a kind hearted person.
